What does Strength in Depth mean?

This term is usually used in team sports, especially in Britain for football and rugby. It implies that the squad or team is deep, ie large, and that amongst that large team there are a lot of strong skills to choose from. The larger the number of players to choose from when picking the team will generally make it stronger, the ideal team can be picked depending on the style and make up of the opposing team. An exceptionally privileged team would be able to form two teams of equally high standard out of their pool of resources.

Generally money is a major factor in strength in depth; the more money you have then the bigger pool of talented players you can buy. Of course, training and tactics do play their part in increasing the strength in depth of the team.
